Active release is a soft tissue management system. When soft tissue injury (to ligaments, muscles, blood vessels, fascia and nerves) occurs, it results in inflammation and swelling of the tissue. The body responds to this inflammation by laying down scar tissue (cross fibers on the tissue) in an attempt to stabilize the affected area. This scar tissue has side effects on our bodies. Some of them include:

  • Restricting motion
  • Reducing circulation
  • Inhibiting nerve function
  • Causing ongoing friction and pressure
  • Usually results in the production of more cross fibers and adhesions

To effectively treat any injury these soft tissue restrictions must be addressed. Active Release is an effective treatment of soft tissue injuries. This technique initially was developed for Iron man athletes; however, Dr. Gilak believes that this is one of the most efficient soft tissue management techniques not only for athletes but for everyone who is suffering from any neuromusculoskeletal problem. This technique requires an alteration in tissue structure, usually affected by breaking up cross-fiber adhesions and restoring normal function to the soft tissue. This system is one of the most effective ways to treat the root cause of the injury, and consequently improves performance. This is especially effective if the adhesion has altered blood circulation. Decreased blood flow results in a decreased amount of oxygen getting to the soft tissue, a primary factor in the production of new scar tissue. Chiropractic manipulation and proper rehabilitation are the perfect combination to treat injuries and to enhance performance.
